Writing 10,000 Times

white flowers

Recently, a friend told me about the 10,000 times principle. I'd heard about the 10,000 hours principle, which I suppose is the same. Anyway, the idea is that you may be, say, a terrific writer. But you haven't put in enough times to make that clear to the world. The idea is also that talent may be a false construct.

I don't know. I kind of disagreed with that. I think there is some basic talent that's necessary. Though of course, it helps to put in your 10,000 times (or hours, depending on your version of the theory).

Anyway, in the end, the whole thing inspired a poem...

Explanation for Our Disagreement

I have no particular talent
for arguing with you;
I've simply done it
nine thousand, nine
hundred and ninety-nine
times. And besides,
it is so fun to make up
with a poem.

This is in celebration of One Shot Wednesday.

Seems so fitting that the final word is "poem." Clever poetic explanation.

Wow! Why, I had never thought of this. I'll have to go pick a fight with Loverby in order to try it. Ahahhahah.

The first line is not true. You do have a particular talent for arguing -- this poem proves it.

lol! Yes, the same old arguments get boring. I like the poetry make-up idea. I'll try that next time I'm in the 9,999 version of an argument.

I think a poem is a great retort. What about all those who are at 10,001 - still struggling?

Honored to have you here at One Shot this week (roll out the red carpet)

Just started Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" -- he's big on the 10,000 principle. I thought, "Oh my gosh, does that mean I need to write 10,000 hours before I ever get published?!" Woe is me!

Anyway, I like your poem -- it's making me feel quite a bit more light-hearted about the whole 10,000 thing.

heheh...this was so sweet!! you bet, it is so easy to make up with/undo the mistakes in a poem..
Poems are so forgiving..aren't they?! :)
A lovely light read...
10000 times or not, poems are much less demanding :) no arguments there!
